Stephenson Ceramics invites you to

SHIGARAKI: INFLUENCES UNEARTHED

A STUDIO POPUP IN PARTNERSHIP WITH U OF M MUSEUM OF ART’S “CLAY AS SOFT POWER: SHIGARAKI WARE IN POSTWAR AMERICA AND JAPAN”

Where: Stephenson Ceramic Studio, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Stephenson Ceramics is proud to partner with UMMA and their exhibition "Clay as Soft Power: Shigaraki Ware in Post-War America and Japan" on view at University of Michigan Museum of Art through May 7th, 2023. The exhibition examines the transformation of the postwar relationship between America and Japan through ceramics.

We invite you to experience a curated studio pop-up exhibit at the artists’ studio of Shigaraki ware and other work created by John and Susanne which show the influences they brought home from their time in Japan. This exhibit celebrates the gentle touches, marks, and natural imperfections the Stephenson’s encountered in the Shigaraki ceramic community and brought home with them to impart to their own craft. Shigaraki influence has shifted over time but is ever-present in John and Susanne’s work with clay.

Sign up for a time to visit the studio to experience and have the opportunity to purchase notable work created by John and Susanne during their trip to Shigaraki, as well as other work showcasing the influence their experience in Shigaraki made on their bodies of work.
