The Stephenson Ceramics Legacy Project
Help Preserve the Legacy of Susanne and John Stephenson
For more than half a century, Susanne and John Stephenson dedicated their lives to art, education, travel, friendship, and community. Their influence extends far beyond the remarkable ceramic works they created. Through their teaching, mentorship, generosity, and unwavering belief in others, they shaped generations of artists, students, colleagues, and friends whose lives continue to reflect their impact today. Today, we invite you to join us in preserving and sharing their extraordinary legacy.
As a thank you for donating to this worthy cause, we have set up donation tiers with perks:
The Stephenson Ceramics Legacy Project was established to document, celebrate, and preserve the lives and work of these two influential figures in contemporary ceramic art. The project seeks not only to honor their artistic achievements but also to capture the countless stories of inspiration, encouragement, and community-building that defined who they were.
Susanne "Susie" Stephenson, Professor Emeritus at Eastern Michigan University School of Art & Design, taught from 1963 to 1991. John Stephenson, Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, taught from 1959 to 1995. Together, they helped build and shape vibrant and enduring communities of ceramic arts worldwide.
Their classrooms extended beyond university walls. Students became colleagues. Colleagues became lifelong friends. Their home became a gathering place for artists, friends, and community. Through shared meals, conversations, travels, workshops, exhibitions, and collaborations, Susie and John fostered connections that continue to thrive decades later.
The Stephenson Ceramics Legacy Project is actively collecting memories, photographs, letters, stories, and personal reflections from former students, collectors, fellow artists, colleagues, and friends. These contributions will help create a permanent archive that preserves not only the Stephensons' artistic accomplishments but also the profound personal impact they had on so many lives.
One of the project's most significant goals is the production and publication of two comprehensive catalogues documenting the artistic careers of John and Susanne Stephenson. These publications will serve as lasting resources for artists, scholars, students, collectors, and future generations who seek to understand their contributions to contemporary ceramics and the broader arts community.
This is more than an effort to preserve artwork. It is an effort to preserve stories, relationships, and a spirit of generosity that continues to inspire people around the world. Your contribution will help support archival research and documentation, catalog production, preservation efforts, and the collection of oral histories and personal stories that might otherwise be lost. Every donation, no matter the size, helps ensure that the Stephensons' remarkable legacy remains accessible and inspiring for generations to come.
If Susie or John ever taught you, encouraged you, welcomed you into their circle, inspired your artistic journey, or touched your life in any way, we hope you will consider supporting this project, sharing this project with others, and sharing your stories about this dynamic duo.
